If you are looking for things to do in Sapporo in September, Sapporo Autumn Fest is an easy event to add to a city-center itinerary. Hokkaido food and local specialties take over Odori Park for more than three weeks.

Sapporo Autumn Fest 2026 dates

The 2026 Sapporo Autumn Fest is scheduled for September 11 through October 3 at Odori Park, covering the 4th–8th, 10th and 11th blocks. The festival stretches for about 1 km, with roughly 300 participating stalls over the event period and more than 2 million visitors in a typical year.

It is less like a small street market and more like a large outdoor food festival where you can sample dishes and specialties from across Hokkaido while walking through central Sapporo.

What is Sapporo weather like in September?

Because the festival stays open until 8:30 PM, it is worth checking Sapporo weather for the evening as well as the afternoon. September nights can feel cooler than travelers expect if they are coming from a warmer part of Japan.

Pair the festival with central Sapporo shopping

Odori Park is right in the city center, so it is easy to combine the festival with shopping. On my own Sapporo trip, I found this area convenient for drugstores and Hokkaido souvenirs such as Shiroi Koibito and ROYCE' chocolate.

If I were planning a September day here again, I would keep it simple: shop and sightsee during the day, then head to Sapporo Autumn Fest for dinner. If your trip falls between September 11 and October 3, it is a practical event to add without building the whole itinerary around it.
